La Taqueria

La Taquería is Belfast’s love letter to real Mexican street food – bright, loud, a bit messy and absolutely all about flavour.

Forget hard shells and piles of grated cheddar; this is soft corn tacos, slow‑cooked fillings and proper salsas, served with a cold cerveza or a serious margarita in the kind of room where the music is always just that little bit too tempting.

They’re a small family of independent taco restaurants with homes on Castle Street and the Ormeau Road, and their craft is rooted in trusted, traditional Mexican recipes. La Taquería ship chillies, spices and Mexican pantry essentials direct from Mexico, then team them up with some of Northern Ireland’s best local produce – think fish, veg and meat treated with the respect they deserve and wrapped up in two bites of joy.

The whole thing started as a conversation between friends – Steve and Andy (of Home and Mourne Seafood Bar) dreaming of an authentic Mexican spot filled with tequila, mezcal, beer and great music – and a chef, Adam, who fell properly in love with cooking real Mexican street food after years in kitchens around the world. Add front‑of‑house hosts who know their way around agave spirits (and how to drink them without lime and salt), and you get a place where the tacos are serious but the mood is relaxed, buzzy and full of craic.

Over the years La Taquería has picked up plenty of fans – from locals who swear by the ceviche, guacamole and cauliflower tacos, to guides and awards lists that consistently name it among Belfast’s essential places to eat. Whether you’re perched at the bar working your way through the mezcal list or sharing plates at a table with friends, the message is simple: let the food speak for itself, and enjoy the ride.
