Based Food
Plant‑Based, Allergen‑Free Baking from Belfast
Founded in 2024 and run from Blackstaff Mill in West Belfast by director Ben Scourfield, the company grew out of recipes developed with his father, a chef of over thirty years, to make “kind” cooking accessible for people with dietary requirements and lifestyle choices.
Their range centres on dry mixes for fluffy pancakes, eggless vegan French toast, chocolate brownies, rainbow cookies and vegan sprinkles, all made with 100% plant‑based ingredients and free from the UK’s top 14 allergens, with no “may contain” risk because the production facility itself operates as completely allergen‑free.
Based Food emphasises inclusivity and convenience – packs are resealable, mixes are designed to work with simple wet ingredients, and the products are already being used by cafés and bakeries in Belfast, Yorkshire and Bristol as well as sold directly to consumers at St George’s Market, Banana Block and online.
Sustainability is another pillar of the business, with packaging that can be recycled in standard household recycling and a supply chain that sources the majority of ingredients from the UK and Ireland to keep provenance clear and food miles lower.
